The light that becomes shadow

I approached the study of the camera obscura in 2011 when I participated in the creation of a photographic work for the project 'Before it is Night' by the artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò at the Maxxi in Rome.

The leitmotif that has always guided my artistic research is however constant and can be found in the relationship between lights and shadows within an imaginary built from experiences, studies and the search for another reality.

For this reason, during the quarantine period imposed by COVID-19, forced into the home together with my partner, I wanted to attempt a summation of all my recent experimentation, building a darkroom in which to enter and set up sets.

In those months, the world was experiencing new fears and anxieties, which is one reason why the images proposed here refer to gloomy realities, to grotesque and suffering characters. Furthermore, it seemed to me that such a particular context imposed a new style, also from a conceptual point of view, and I chose to produce unique works, i.e. negatives made on silver salt paper.

Within these representations, I also wanted to tell the intimate reality that I was experiencing together with my partner, using her as a model, actress and muse. The images, therefore, are an allegorical representation of the present through continuous references to art history, Greek myths and my latest research on the unconscious and female archetypes.
